Dress by Body Type: This Week’s Shape: The Apple

Time for another look at dressing by body type for plus size dresses. Most women know what body type they are by now but finding the perfect dress for your shape might be a challenge, that’s where plussizesdresses.com comes in! This week we are focusing on the Apple. An Apple body type is round all over which usually means not much of a waistline. While often this body type looks great in jeans and plus size jackets and blazers or a double-breasted suit, for example, plus size dresses can be a challenge. We recommend a printed shift dress that creates a more elongated illusion with the print and conceals the tummy with its shape. Also, wrap dresses help to cinch in at the waistline to create the look of an hourglass figure. Wrap dresses and surplice dresses also and draw attention up to the bust while slimming just above the waist.

Dress by Body Type: This Week’s Shape: The Strawberry

A while back we put up a dress by body type guide and we used fruit shapes as symbols for the different plus size body shapes. There are many symbols out there that attempt to represent the various curves of a woman’s body type but we liked the luscious, abundant analogy of fruit for our plus size dresses. This week’s plus size blog focuses on the sweet strawberry. This is the body type that we call blessed in the bust. Often this plus size body type, if not well-endowed with a large bust size, has wide shoulders and narrow hips which can also be called “top heavy” – also often with longer legs. For all of these scenarios, the aim is to balance out the top with the bottom while accentuating all the benefits of having a great bust and/or long legs. The best dresses for the Strawberry are shirtdresses that flatter and shape the bust but also show shape in the hips to create more symmetry from top to bottom. If you struggle with finding plus size special occasion dresses because of your large bust, try a plus size evening dress with gathered bodice that can give you the coverage and support you need. Also, the classic sheath dress is a great look for large chested women because the tailored shape will contain the top half while showing off great legs. Just avoid a neckline that’s too high as this tends to accentuate the top half too much. Also, avoid any plus size dresses with puffy sleeves or a voluminous top.

First Look at Plus Size LBD’s for Spring. Some timeless, some practical, some surprising.

The new plus size dresses are in and there are tons of colorful options but go-to black is always the right choice no matter what season, so here are the latest Jessica London LBD’s (little black dresses) we recommend that you can wear now and forever after.

The Sheath:

A forever classic, it’s almost not worth mentioning because by now you should have at least one plus size sheath, but it is just such a flattering classic little black dress that we can’t stress enough the importance of getting at least one good black sheath dress into your wardrobe no matter what the season or occasion.

The Ponté Knit Dress:

This is a very popular and substantial stretch knit perfect for wear-to-work dressing but even better for the transition weather when it’s not too hot and not too cold just before summer. The new ponté has enough give in it to be super comfortable but its blend of rayon, polyester and spandex makes it hold its shape. It also travels really well because it is wrinkle-resistant.

The Plus Size Cocktail Dress:

It may seem like people don’t go out for cocktails anymore but the LBD was originated to do just that. It is the dress designed solely for the purpose of looking chic. Not too dressy, not too fancy, not too casual. Think Audrey Hepburn.

The Maxi Dress:

All black head-to-toe? It may sound like too much for warmer weather but as long as the plus size maxi dress is in a stretch jersey fabric with a long slit, it can actually look very glamorous and not at all “witchy woman”.

Plus Size Dress Fashion Report from the SAG Awards 2012: COLOR and More!

This is the season of award show and dresses, dresses, dresses! So we always try to keep the plus size dresses buzz current by reviewing the best and worst of the red carpet fashion and seeing what out of all the gowns and formal dresses can a plus size girl expect to wear and look great in for her special occasion dressing. This year, the key highlight of the dresses from the Screen Actors Guild Awards was COLOR! Bold and bright, rich and luscious colors really stole the show. Michelle Williams in hot red and Sophie Vergara in hot pink, not to mention Melissa McCarthy in deep navy blue. On a side note, Octavia Spencer looked stunning in a Grecian grey gown and speaking of Greek Goddesses, Viola Davis was the embodiment of one in a gorgeous white and gold gown.

What Plus Size Dress Will you Get Based on the Golden Globe Dresses?

This year the trends at the Golden Globes weren’t about color but about what wasn’t there: daring bare backs, off-shoulder gowns and thigh slits; and what there was a lot of: long over-flowing trains and ruffled hemlines. Nude shades and neutral tones were also very common but that trend was big last year so it did not have as much impact. Not to mention, plus sized dresses are so much more dramatic in dark greens, reds and black, the colors that did stand out at the 2012 Golden Globes. Long draping evening gowns were dramatically displayed and some of the dress trains truly dragged on the floor. Mary J. Blige even had a feathered train designed by Michael Kors. Best dressed on the red carpet included Angelina Jolie in Versace–a gown that draped all the way to the floor with a very deep slit. Julianne Moore in a black Chanel gown with a fishtail hem, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang with an equally dramatic fringed and draping train.

Those that did not go for the dramatic sweeping train, dared to bare much of their back, décolletage, shoulders or thighs in high slits. Kate Winslet, for example, had a peek-a-boo keyhole to frame her cleavage. Viola Davis also draped herself in a goddess-inspired a-symmetric gown with a high thigh-baring slit. Claire Danes looked tame in a structured black and white column dress but revealed an alluring cutout back. Queen Latifah who we look to as an example of a woman who dresses for plus size, bared her shoulder and back in an off-shoulder dress. Award-winner Octavia Spencer looked like a goddess in a Tadashi Shoji formal gown with twist front and a beautifully draped hem. Now that the show is over we’re sure to see trendy plus size dresses mimicking the ones worn by celebrities but Jessica London’s collection always covers the timeless trends as well as offering plus size special occasion dresses that will get you nominated for the most gorgeous woman in the room every time. Don’t forget the plus sized shapewear to give you a smooth look under your dresses.
