Plus Size Dress Fashion Report from the SAG Awards 2012: COLOR and More!

This is the season of award show and dresses, dresses, dresses! So we always try to keep the plus size dresses buzz current by reviewing the best and worst of the red carpet fashion and seeing what out of all the gowns and formal dresses can a plus size girl expect to wear and look great in for her special occasion dressing. This year, the key highlight of the dresses from the Screen Actors Guild Awards was COLOR! Bold and bright, rich and luscious colors really stole the show. Michelle Williams in hot red and Sophie Vergara in hot pink, not to mention Melissa McCarthy in deep navy blue. On a side note, Octavia Spencer looked stunning in a Grecian grey gown and speaking of Greek Goddesses, Viola Davis was the embodiment of one in a gorgeous white and gold gown.

What Plus Size Dress Will you Get Based on the Golden Globe Dresses?

This year the trends at the Golden Globes weren’t about color but about what wasn’t there: daring bare backs, off-shoulder gowns and thigh slits; and what there was a lot of: long over-flowing trains and ruffled hemlines. Nude shades and neutral tones were also very common but that trend was big last year so it did not have as much impact. Not to mention, plus sized dresses are so much more dramatic in dark greens, reds and black, the colors that did stand out at the 2012 Golden Globes. Long draping evening gowns were dramatically displayed and some of the dress trains truly dragged on the floor. Mary J. Blige even had a feathered train designed by Michael Kors. Best dressed on the red carpet included Angelina Jolie in Versace–a gown that draped all the way to the floor with a very deep slit. Julianne Moore in a black Chanel gown with a fishtail hem, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang with an equally dramatic fringed and draping train.

Those that did not go for the dramatic sweeping train, dared to bare much of their back, décolletage, shoulders or thighs in high slits. Kate Winslet, for example, had a peek-a-boo keyhole to frame her cleavage. Viola Davis also draped herself in a goddess-inspired a-symmetric gown with a high thigh-baring slit. Claire Danes looked tame in a structured black and white column dress but revealed an alluring cutout back. Queen Latifah who we look to as an example of a woman who dresses for plus size, bared her shoulder and back in an off-shoulder dress. Award-winner Octavia Spencer looked like a goddess in a Tadashi Shoji formal gown with twist front and a beautifully draped hem. Now that the show is over we’re sure to see trendy plus size dresses mimicking the ones worn by celebrities but Jessica London’s collection always covers the timeless trends as well as offering plus size special occasion dresses that will get you nominated for the most gorgeous woman in the room every time. Don’t forget the plus sized shapewear to give you a smooth look under your dresses.

Top 4 Reasons to Be Grateful for Your Curves!

This Thanksgiving, enjoy your holiday and give thanks and praises for your lovely curves. Here are 5 reasons why wearing and flaunting your plus size fashion and plus size dresses is something to rejoice about!

1)We never have to try to look feminine or sexy.  Plus size women with curves fill out their clothing better and look sexy even when they aren’t even trying. Ever see a skinny girl try to stick out her hip to get some curve-appeal going? We never have to do that! We’ve got it all going on naturally.

2) We have a lot of confidence and presence because of our curves. We don’t have to get pushy or loud to get noticed because our curvaceous bods do it for us. Even better when we dress up in a plus size wrap dress or plus size party dress. Make way – because once you get us all dressed up in the hottest plus size clothing, we will steal the show.

3) We’re more comfortable. Yup, we are soft and smooth and very attractive because of our plushness. Who wouldn’t want to cuddle up to a soft and luscious plus size woman? No worries about getting poked by any bony elbows here!

4) Maybe not all, but most of us are hedonists. That means we love to satisfy all the senses. From delicious food to beautiful plus size dresses, to plus size accessories, jewelry, fragrances and sensual pleasures, we enjoy it all so much and that makes life as a curvy girl one amazingly pleasurable ride. We like a little sugar in our bowl… to quote Nina Simone.

So this Thanksgiving, love your cooking, love your family, embrace your desires for delicious food and everything that goes along with the holiday. Be grateful for your lovely curves and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

JL Goes One-on-One with TLC’s Big Sexy Star Tiffany Banks

Tiffany Bank shares her thoughts on plus size fashion, life, love and loving her curves!

Q: How did you get cast on TLC’s show Big Sexy?

A: I saw a casting online and submitted myself. They narrowed their search down before seeing anyone and I was invited to a private casting. They kept calling me back and the rest is history!  I’m a lucky girl

Q: What was your experience during filming the show with cameras following you around all the time?

A: It was fun! People kept wondering and asking us what we were doing and they always looked really confused. The shooting itself took a few weeks but we got to do such fun things like go to Miami (which was my first time) and go speed-dating (though that ended tragically for me) *laughs*.

Q: What has been everyone’s reaction after the show premiered?

A: The reaction overall was really positive. I got tons of emails from women and men who said the show affected them in a positive way and inspired them. I think plus size women were craving something like this on television and people were just so happy to see women on TV they could relate to. It was a powerful feeling to know that in just 3 episodes people felt different about their lives. Amazing!

Q: Can you give us some background on yourself, your professional goals?

A: I am a “Cali” girl living in NYC. I had some TV/radio experience before getting into modeling. I’ve been signed with a few agencies and right now I am working on a few projects that I am excited about sharing soon. The sky is the limit for me and I plan on working more in TV, hosting, speaking and modeling.

Q: Do you have any plus size clothing fashion advice or tips that you swear by?

A: I like to keep my wardrobe basic and add personality with accessories and colors. I also do little things that make me happy like wear bright yellow nail polish or bright red lipstick. The little fun things you do for yourself really add up and boost your confidence!

Q: Lets have some fun, fashion Icon?

A: Tough one. I like Beyonce. Whether she is casual in jeans or wearing a gown to an awards show she always looks so classy and put together. I also really like the risks that Beth Ditto takes. She does what she wants and I love it.

Q: Celebrity crush?

A: How much time do you have? I really love Idris Elba. He is just so yummy and super talented. And the accent ain’t all that bad either, honey!

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?

A: About 3-4 times a week I catch myself saying “If I were a bird I would fly” because trains and buses just aren’t fast enough for me. *laughs* I’d be one big sparkly fat flying superhero with a sequence cape saving the day!

Are You’re a Party Animal?

Do you dare to wear the wildest plus size dresses when you’re clubbing, partying or whatever? Do you want to outshine your girlfriends and grab all the attention for yourself? You sound like a party animal. If you are this plus size woman then you are going to love the very outgoing, captivating animal prints that are a big part of plus size trendy clothing this season. Holiday party special occasion dresses can so often be boring but now you will not only be able to find your fit in the right plus size cocktail dress for your figure, but you’ll also be able to show off your wild side. Leopard is the king of the prints right now but faux fur is also all the rage for your accessories and top layers. A faux fur stole or faux fur coat will make your look glamorous and a maybe a bit dangerous too (think femme fatale). If you aren’t a wild and crazy party girl, you can still rock the animal print trend in a more demure and classic way. Leopard print has been an iconic fashion statement for decades so some animal print trim on a glove, an animal print scarf or a hint of leopard in the lining of a sophisticated jacket is a perfectly fashionable way to wear wilder prints.
